I’m thinking of placing a shim to put more pressure on the ATI chip to reconnect that ball grid array.

I got this laptop for free because it was no longer reliably working, so I’m very willing to try risky procedures and safer ones that may only provide temporary relief. Lifting the laptop gave its mainboard enough pressure in the right places to reconnect the BGA (ATI) chip. I’m starting to believe the ATI chip’s ball grid array is starting to come apart. MemTest86+ did report a good working RAM chip for at least one pass. I put the laptop down and the timer froze. The timer had jumped to its correct time and the progress bar displayed as expected.
